Open InDesign via the Start Menu on the lower left corner of the screen.

Once it has loaded go to File Menu and Choose New ---> Document

The window that appears lets you choose,

the number of pages of your document

the paper size of your document

the number of columns

the margins

and the orientation of the page

For this exercise choose an 11x17 page and choose "landscape" for the orientation.

Click OK.
