InDesign Placing Objects

Just as in Illustrator, if you want to add images or objects to your document you "place" them.

Go to the File menu at the top of the screen and choose place.

You can place an image (jpg, gif, psd, tif, ai...) or even a word document.

Once you have placed the image it is simply a link to the original, so if you make changes to the original in another program the changes will appear in InDesign.

For this tutorial you can place whatever you want. Try placing images and short word documents.

Play around with each to see how you can manipulate them.

Note: After you have chosen which element to place you can actually place it two different ways. The first is to click once. The element will appear as its actual size. The other method is to drag a box the size that you want it and the element will appear within that box.

Fitting

More likely than not you will want to resize your element that you placed. You can adjust the box around the element until it is the correct size and then Right click on the element and choose fitting, and then choose Fit Content proportionally.

Play around with the other elements within the fitting menu. What do they do?

Short cut keys: If you want to resize an object you can select the corner of the bounding box and drag it bigger or smaller. To have the bounding box scale proportionally you can hold down the shift key. (Sound familiar? This is a common shortcut found in almost all programs). To have the content also refit proportionally you can hold down the Control key with the Shift key.

Try it.
