| BROAD SCOPE OF POSITION: The National and State Register Historian is responsible for administering the registration element of the National Historic Preservation Act and the State Register Act in the State of Colorado. This position is a non-classified, full time position, exempt from overtime under the Fair Labor Standards Act, reporting to the Director of the Preservation Planning Unit of the Office of Archaeology and Historic Preservation, and serving at the pleasure of the Board of Directors. This position has been exempted from the State Personnel System. DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: 1. Prepares, edits, researches, and rewrites information entered in the National and State Register of Historic Places registration forms. 2. Plans and prepares meetings of the National and State Register Review Boards. 3. Reviews and provides technical assistance regarding historic context documents. 4. Provides property determinations of eligibility for the National and State Registers. 5. Provides technical information and assistance to government agencies and private individuals preparing registration documents and forms for submission to the State Review Boards, the Colorado Historical Society Board of Directors, and the National Park Service. 6. Travel and conduct onsite visits to properties potentially eligible for the National Register or the State Register. 7. Interpret and apply general criteria and guidelines for the purpose of evaluating buildings, sites, districts, and objects significant in the history of Colorado. 8. Review historical and architectural surveys performed by local governments and contractors in order to provide determinations of National Register and State Register eligibility. 9. Manage data and entries in the National and State Register database of listings. 10. Prepare and/or present programs that train individuals and organizations to research and prepare nomination forms and to conduct cultural resource surveys. 11. Prepares press releases and other publications to promote the National and State Register programs. QUALIFICATIONS: Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Bachelor's Degree in History, Architectural History, Architecture, Historic Architecture, Historic Preservation or closely related field. Master's Degree in one of the above listed fields is preferred. The successful applicant must meet the Professional Qualification Standards in Federal Regulations 36CFR61 Appendix A for one of the preservation disciplines – History, Archaeology, Architectural History, Architecture or Historic Architecture. Experience in historical research and writing is required. Cultural resource management or historic preservation administration is desirable. Computer word processing and database experience, strong organizational abilities, and effective communication skills are needed. National Register program experience strongly desired. | ||
