Legacy Admissions
What are the odds of your child being admitted to U.Va. if you graduated from the University? Interestingly, children of alumni living outside Virginia have a better chance of being admitted than those living in state. “In Virginia, we have to give fairly equal consideration to the children of all taxpayers,” explained Jack Blackburn, Dean of Admissions. “For those living out of state, the odds improve. The admittance rate for non-legacy applicants is roughly twenty-five percent. Approximately fifty percent of legacy applicants are admitted.” Still, special consideration isn’t extended very often. “I think there is an assumption that a lot of that goes on,” said Blackburn. “In truth, most prospective students are very capable of getting into U.Va. without their parents’ help.”
