Executive Director, Urban Land Institute South Carolina
Amy is currently Executive Director of the Urban Land Institute South Carolina. Previously she was Director of Business and Neighborhood Services (BNS) for the City of Charleston. BNS advocates on behalf of business and neighborhood interests, the mission is twofold—(1) to help new and existing businesses in the City grow and succeed; and (2) to help neighborhoods flourish and develop equitably. To fulfill this mission, we assist business owners in a wide variety of ways—finding and developing real estate, identifying resources, navigating the City’s permitting and approval processes, and securing financing. Amy also started Barrett Research Associates in 2015, and prior to that she was vice president at permar inc, a well-known real estate advisory services firm based in Charleston, South Carolina and worked for Economics Research Associates (now AECOM). Amy also served as a U.S. Peace Corps Volunteer in Central America; was a neighborhood planning consultant for Mary Means & Associates, a community planning firm; and was an adjunct professor at the Department of Urban Affairs and Planning at Virginia Tech.
Amy has a BA in Urban Studies and Political Science from Furman University and a Masters in Urban and Environmental Planning from the University of Virginia where she specialized in community development and land use planning.
Amy joined the Dean’s Advisory Board in Fall 2016.
