Undergraduate Students

All undergraduate students can participate in AccessUVa, U.Va.’s financial aid program.  For more information about financial aid and cost of attendance, please visit the Student Financial Services website.  Most scholarships available to School of Architecture students are awarded through AccessUVa.

Graduate Students

Graduate students may be eligible for three types of financial aid as a graduate student within the School of Architecture:

  1. Fellowships: Money is awarded from the specific department.  If graduate students receive more than $4,999 in fellowship support, they also qualify for a health insurance subsidy through the U.Va. Aetna Student Health Plan.
  2. Federal Work–Study Funding: If awarded work–study funds, students must work—and receive the job through the School of Architecture or the University of Virginia—to receive money. The University of Virginia Student Financial Services office will award work–study funds.
  3. Federal Loans: In addition to the Stafford Subsidized and Unsubsidized loans, students may also apply for private loans to help fund their education. The University of Virginia Student Financial Services office will award loan funds.

Please note that federal financial aid listed in items 2 and 3 above is available only to U.S. citizens or eligible non–U.S. citizens. All students are considered for merit-based fellowships.

To apply for federal loans and work–study funding, you must submit the following applications:

  • Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) for 2013-2014 (not available until January 2013). The U.S. Department of Education requires all students submit FAFSA each year to be considered for federal financial aid.  The priority filing deadline is March 31; however current students applying to the School of Architecture are encouraged to  submit the form no later than February 15. Returning students should submit the FAFSA by the priority deadline of March 31.
  • University of Virginia Financial Aid Application.  This application, required by the University of Virginia each year, is accessible through the Student Information System.  The priority filing deadline is March 31; however current students applying to the School of Architecture are encouraged to submit the form no later than February 15. Returning students should submit the FAFSA by the priority deadline of March 31.  More information about how to access this application will be sent to applicants by February 1.

If you are applying to the School of Architecture, you will be considered for all merit–based fellowships based on the strength of your initial program application. If you are offered a merit–based fellowship you will receive notification in your initial acceptance letter.  Returning graduate students will be notified of fellowship awards by June.
