Title and Credits
ARCH 7210. Structural Design for Dynamic Loads. 3 credits.

Format
One 1.25 hour lecture and one 1.25 hour lab meeting per week The course is required for Path A and Path B graduate students.

Meeting Time and Place
MW 11:00 AM - 12:15 PM. In general, Wednesday meetings will be in room 158; Monday meetings will be in room 105. Special meeting times will be announced.

Prerequisites
ARCH 624 or equivalent: knowledge of basic statics, mechanics of materials, and structural system design

Objectives
The course aims to give each student a grasp of the general theoretical and practical issues involved in designing buildings to resist wind, earthquakes and other dynamic loads. The course seeks to develop the ability to develop scematic designs of structural systems and work productively with technical consultants.

Assignments
The course includes the following types of assignments:

• Lab assignments: Most Monday meetings involve an activity to perform during the meeting time. Materials will be collected at the end of the meeting. Lab work must be completed during the scheduled meeting.

• Pre-lab assignments: Many labs have an associated pre-lab assignment involving work to prepare for the upcoming lab meeting. Pre-lab assignments will typically be collected during the lab meeting.

• Case study: There is a case study assignment involving an analysis of a significant work of architecture in a region where either wind or earthquake loads are significant. The study will involved both a written report and oral presentation.

• Take-home tests: Approximately halfway through the semester, there will be a short take-home quiz involving basic methods and concepts, plus a similar take-home final at the end of the semester.

Grading will be based on the following approximate proportions:
