Major Health Facilities
One of the major goals of the Jefferson Area Board of Aging 2020 plan was to promote accessibility to promote access to high-quality healthcare, Pharmaceuticals and Support Services. This health facility data illustrates where hospitals, clinics, and other health services are located. Other maps show the location of assisted-living facilities and JABA locations. Other health services can also be mapped including doctor offices, dental offices, home health care provider offices, and medical equipment providers. Some of the difficulty with these will be discussed later in this page.
The maps presented here show the location of different kinds of major health facilities: Hospitals, Major Clinics, Immediate Doctors and Departments of Health. The first three often serve the needs of emergency and rehabilitative care. The latter serves a preventative health care function.

The map above positions the Major Medical Facilities in the Thomas Jefferson Planning District and shows the approximate time required to travel by automobile to the nearest facility. Additional facilities, which were not listed in the local telephone directory and other web based sources, may be present in the region. Because the map only displays hospitals located in the Thomas Jefferson Planning District, it does not account for people who might travel outside of the district for services. For example, people residing in eastern Louisa County may not have to travel over a half hour to get to a hospital or clinic near Richmond and those in western Nelson County may find Lynchburg or Waynesboro health facilities more convenient.

Examination of total population helps assess the accessibility of health facilities to the general public, the accessibility of health employment locations to a labor force, and the regional accessibility of family and friends who might visit or support seniors who are receiving medical care.
METHODS: The Charlottesville local telephone directory and other web-based sources were used to locate Major Medical Facilities in the Thomas Jefferson Planning District. Road way speeds were used to generate the travel time to access the nearest facility. The average travel time for each census block was computed and multiplied by either the number of persons 65 and older or the total population to get the aggregate travel time for those two respective groups. This is mapped for each census block. Using the posted speed may lead to slight differences in actual travel time accessibilities Additional facilities not listed in the local telephone directory and other web based sources, may be present in the region.
IMPLICATIONS: Mapping the total time for all person 65 years or older to travel to the nearest hospital for each census block may assist JABA in identifying the locations in need of transportation assistance. For example, some of the areas with an eight-hour aggregate travel time may have a high population of persons 65 years or older, which have difficulty traveling to the medical facilities. Therefore, these are areas in which JABA could direct their services to assist these populations in need.
